SACRAMENTO – Today, Angelique Ashby announced that California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber has endorsed her candidacy for State Senate.
“Angelique Ashby has proven she has what it takes to tackle tough issues and deliver results by bringing people together,” said Secretary Weber. “She will bring that same energy, problem-solving focus and commitment to inclusion to the state legislature – I’m proud to endorse her for State Senate.”
Secretary Weber is California’s first Black Secretary of State and only the fifth African American to serve as a state constitutional officer in California’s 170-year history. Before her appointment as Secretary of State, she served four terms as an assemblymember representing California’s 79th Assembly District.
“Dr. Shirley Weber’s legacy of fighting for equality and fairness is unrivaled,” said Angelique Ashby. “She is a hero to many, including me, and it is an honor to have her support.”
Secretary Weber joins fellow constitutional officers Governor Gavin Newsom and Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis in endorsing Ashby for the seat.
Ashby currently represents Sacramento City Council District 1 and serves as Vice Mayor of the City of Sacramento. Senate District 8 includes the cities of Sacramento and Elk Grove, and most of Sacramento County.
