SACRAMENTO – Angelique Ashby’s campaign released the following statement tonight in response to the early results released by the Sacramento County Elections Office placing Ashby in the top 2 heading into the November General Election for Senate District 8:
“This is clearly a close race, and voters saw through over a million dollars in negative ads from my opponent intended to smear me and my record. I’m excited to continue sharing my story and positive vision for our community as we head into November.”
According to the latest returns, Ashby and Jones are apart by single digits, despite Jones’ record spending and failure to accept the state spending cap. In the last State Senate primary election for this seat, Dr. Richard Pan trailed his opponent by nearly 10 percentage points before ultimately winning the general election. Senator Pan has endorsed Ashby in this race.
Ashby currently represents Sacramento City Council District 1 and serves as Vice Mayor of the City of Sacramento. Senate District 8 includes the cities of Sacramento and Elk Grove, and most of Sacramento County.
