SACRAMENTO – Today, Angelique Ashby announced that Governor Gavin Newsom has endorsed her candidacy for State Senate District 8.
“Angelique Ashby is the fighter the Sacramento region deserves and the partner I need in the State Senate to get things done,” said Governor Newsom. “Angelique worked her way through college and law school as a single mom struggling to make ends meet and went on to start a small business helping women and foster youth. Now, as a City Councilmember, she puts our priorities first – championing paid family leave and access to childcare, creating affordable housing, and protecting our environment.
“Angelique will be the first woman elected to the State Senate from the Sacramento region in more than two decades; she’ll bring years of experience advocating for women – especially their right to privacy, the ability to make their own healthcare decisions and the fundamental right to an abortion. We need Angelique’s energy, perspective, and results-driven leadership in the State Senate. Please join me in supporting her.”
Governor Newsom joins a long list of legislative leaders and local elected officials who have endorsed Ashby in this race, including: the California Democratic Legislative Women’s Caucus; State Senators Dr. Richard Pan, Steve Glazer, Bob Hertzberg, Sydney Kamlager, and Susan Rubio; and Assemblymembers Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, Jim Cooper, Cristina Garcia, and Blanca Rubio.
“Governor Newsom has been on the frontlines of many righteous fights,” said Ashby. “I look forward to fighting alongside him in the Capitol. It is an honor to earn the support of someone who shares the same passion I have for serving our communities and making our state a better and more equitable place for all who call it home.”
Ashby currently represents Sacramento City Council District 1 and serves as Vice Mayor of the City of Sacramento. Senate District 8 includes the cities of Sacramento and Elk Grove, and most of Sacramento County.
